How ASUU Support Helped a Gombe Student With Limb Difference Reach Graduation
Maryam Umar, a student with limb difference at Gombe State University, is set to graduate with a degree in Economics after completing her final-year coursework, examinations and project. She said financial and physical barriers delayed her education after primary and secondary school. Although she passed her JAMB and NECO examinations, she could not immediately enter university because she lacked sponsorship. After her story gained public attention, ASUU verified her credentials and offered her a scholarship. The union also wrote to her department to request extra time for tests and examinations, as she writes with her toes. Umar said her lecturers supported her throughout her studies and expressed gratitude for completing her degree without an academic failure. She encouraged people living with disabilities to pursue education and opportunities beyond street begging.
