Nigeria Aims for UN Security Council Seat After Historic CEDAW Win
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN has announced plans to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council next year. This follows the recent re-election of Esther Eghobamien-Mshelia to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim hailed the CEDAW victory as a clear sign of Nigeria’s renewed influence in the United Nations system. He congratulated President Tinubu’s administration for its focus on advancing women, children and young people on the global stage. Since his arrival in New York, Nigeria has won three major UN elections, including seats on the UN Budget Committee and the International Law Commission. The envoy also celebrated Mrs. Ahunna Eziakonwa’s appointment as Special Adviser on Africa to the UN Secretary-General. Looking ahead, Jimoh Ibrahim said securing a Security Council seat will be his “biggest gift” to President Tinubu and all Nigerians. Esther Eghobamien-Mshelia pledged to use her renewed mandate to promote inclusive digital governance and safeguard women’s rights worldwide.
