Ejiofor Warns Against Religious Division Ahead of 2027 Elections

Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has warned that religious rhetoric could be weaponised to divide Nigerians as the 2027 general elections approach. In a statement, Ejiofor said citizens are free to practise their faith and express political views, but no religious or political platform should be used to threaten, exclude or diminish people with different beliefs. He cited constitutional provisions on religious neutrality and non-discrimination, and urged security agencies to assess any allegedly inflammatory statements fairly and act before tensions escalate. He also called on public officials to avoid giving legitimacy to divisive messages through their presence at such gatherings.
