Is It Biblically Wrong for Christian Women to Wear Makeup and Jewelry?
Many Christian women wonder if wearing makeup, earrings or other jewelry is acceptable. The direct answer from traditional teaching is that outward adornment should be minimal, and attention should focus on a humble heart. A simple wedding band worn as a sign of commitment—rather than decoration—can be permitted. Scripture urges modesty over display. 1 Timothy 2:9–10 calls believers to dress modestly, “not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.” Similarly, 1 Peter 3:3–4 warns against outward gold or braiding, encouraging a meek and quiet spirit as true beauty. The Old Testament also records God’s judgment when pride led to excess. In Isaiah 3:16–24, the removal of tinkling ornaments, chains and rings served as a rebuke. These passages highlight that inner character matters more than external embellishment.
