Oxford VC Urges African Universities to Build Models That Fit Local Realities
Oxford Vice-Chancellor Professor Irene Tracey has urged African countries to stop treating British, European and American university models as templates to be copied wholesale. Speaking at a higher education convening in Accra, she said African universities can design flexible systems for young populations, local labour markets and wider access. She highlighted stackable credentials, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship and closer links with sectors such as agriculture, technology and the creative economy. The discussion raises questions for Nigeria and other African countries: whether regulators, governments and funding bodies will support courses with stronger industry placement, digital access and curricula designed around local needs. Tracey said partnerships across Africa show that innovation can flow in both directions.
