Unsecured Firearm Leads to Death of 12-Year-Old Boy in Maiduguri
On Wednesday, March 17, an eight-year-old boy in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, found his father’s loaded Dane gun and accidentally shot his 12-year-old neighbour during play. According to a local security analyst, the weapon had been negligently left unsecured by the father, a member of the Nigerian Hunters Group. The victim was rushed to the State Specialists Hospital Maiduguri but was pronounced dead on arrival. His family received the body for burial according to Islamic rites. Police have recovered the firearm and launched a full inquiry by the State Criminal Investigation Department. Authorities say the investigation aims to prevent similar accidents and ensure accountability for negligent gun storage.
