Adegbite Says Onaiyekan Refused to Recognise Tinubu as President After 2023 Election
Bishop Stephen Adegbite, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, has urged religious leaders to avoid political actions and statements that could deepen divisions in the country. Speaking in a television interview, Adegbite revisited reactions to the 2023 presidential election. He said former Archbishop John Onaiyekan had stated that he would not recognise Bola Tinubu as president after Tinubu was declared winner. Adegbite argued that declared election outcomes should be respected unless overturned by the courts. He said clerics may support candidates of their choice but should not attack or discredit opposing candidates. Adegbite also warned that irresponsible comments on social media can spread misinformation and worsen political tensions. He called for constructive dialogue, peaceful elections, respect for democratic institutions and prayers for those in authority.
