Gowon’s Aburi Accord Betrayal: The Untold Cause of Nigeria’s Lasting Divide
Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, says former Head of State Yakubu Gowon distorted civil war history to hide his betrayal of the Aburi Accord. He argues that Gowon’s unilateral Decree No. 8 stripped key elements of the Ghana agreement and isolated the Eastern Region. Ejimakor claims this action sabotaged the best chance for peace after the 1966 anti-Igbo pogroms. He adds that post-war policies, such as the £20 flat payout to Biafran depositors, deepened Igbo marginalisation despite the “No Victor, No Vanquished” declaration. According to Ejimakor, Gowon’s memoir unfairly blames Ojukwu for blocking peace efforts while evading responsibility for policies that widened ethnic divisions. The continued agitation for Biafra, he says, proves that the root causes of the conflict were never truly addressed.
