Diphtheria Claims 17 Lives in Niger as Officials Urge Parents to Vaccinate Children
Diphtheria has killed 17 people in Niger State between January and early August 2026, according to the Niger State Primary Health Care Development Agency. The state has recorded 124 confirmed cases, with recent deaths reported in Chanchaga and Katcha LGAs. Health officials say low routine childhood immunisation and vaccine hesitancy have contributed to the deaths. Seventy-four patients have recovered after treatment in Bida and Agaie LGAs, while surveillance continues in Suleja. The state government and UNICEF are working with community leaders and health workers to improve vaccination uptake, disease prevention and access to healthcare. Parents and guardians are urged to ensure children receive recommended routine vaccines.
