NMA Warns Against Harassing Health Workers Over Hospital Deaths

The Nigerian Medical Association has urged patients and their relatives not to harass, intimidate or assault healthcare workers when deaths occur in hospitals. NMA President Prof. Afekhide-Ernest Omoti said the National Policy Against Intimidation and Harassment of Healthcare Workers now provides for offenders to be prosecuted and to compensate affected medical personnel. Hospitals are also expected to provide adequate security for staff. He said many confrontations stem from grief, miscommunication and the belief that every critically ill patient must survive. The association urged wider use of CCTV in emergency units and more public education on hospital procedures.
