Anambra Plans Unified Payments for Private Schools, Warns on Exam Fraud
Anambra State plans to introduce a unified payment system for private schools to curb multiple taxation, improve transparency and protect proprietors from unauthorised charges. Commissioner for Education Dr. Ekene Ogugua announced the plan at a meeting with private school association leaders in Awka on November 5. The system is expected to identify approved levies and authorised collectors. School operators were urged to report demands outside the official payment process. The state also reaffirmed its ban on graduation ceremonies, saying the policy is intended to reduce costs for parents and prevent social pressure on pupils. From next year, schools and education workers who facilitate examination malpractice could face legal consequences, including school closures. The commissioner called on school associations to monitor compliance and provide lists of unregistered schools. The Ministry of Education also advised proprietors to seek official guidance when they encounter questionable demands or regulatory issues.
