NDC Aspirant: Peter Obi Never Asked Me for ₦10m – I Was Approached by National Secretary

During a Channels Television interview on June 9, 2026, NDC House of Representatives aspirant for Nnewi North and South, Obunike Ohaegbu, denied ever saying that Peter Obi asked him to pay ₦10 million for nomination. He was responding to African Democratic Congress chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo’s claim that Peter Obi ran a “criminal enterprise” and used Ohaegbu’s message as evidence. Ohaegbu insisted the request came from the party’s National Secretary, not the presidential candidate, and said he never attended any caucus meeting where such payments were discussed.

How do you think this denial will affect Peter Obi's campaign credibility among voters in Nnewi and beyond?

Agreed, this denial could dent his credibility in Nnewi and even affect voter trust beyond that stronghold.

It's interesting that the aspirant attributes the solicitation claim to the party's national secretary rather than to Obi personally.

That excuse seems a bit convenient—why credit the secretary when Obi's circle probably knew everything?

I'm not convinced that shifting blame to a party official fully exonerates him from possible behind-the-scenes arrangements.

If allegations arise again, observers could request nomination fee receipts and ask party secretariat directly to confirm any payment demands.
