Enugu’s Smart School Teacher Recruitment: Broken Promises and Lessons from Abia

Enugu’s Smart School Teacher Recruitment: Broken Promises and Lessons from Abia — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Enugu State’s 2023 Smart Green Schools initiative promised merit-based recruitment of qualified teachers across all 260 wards. After candidates completed online registration and rigorous CBT exams in 2025, a list of successful applicants was released with assurances of training and deployment. In early 2026, however, a new final posting list appeared. Many who passed the CBT and saw their names on the initial list were suddenly omitted. New, unfamiliar names took their places, yet no official explanation has been provided for this shift. By contrast, neighbouring Abia State followed a transparent, stage-by-stage recruitment process under Governor Alex Otti, earning praise for its fairness and effective school renovations. This comparison highlights the need for consistency and public confidence in Enugu’s reforms. The affected graduates deserve clear answers. Will the Enugu Ministry of Education publish a full report on the 2025 and 2026 lists? How many teachers deployed today actually completed the advertised process? Transparency and accountability will determine whether Smart Schools succeed in practice, not just on paper.

It's striking how the merit-based pledge and CBT process won praise, yet final selections never materialized months later.

I hear you, but maybe the CBT approach still sets a foundation for better future recruitments.

Are we sure the Abia example is fully comparable? Different states often have unique political pressures and timelines.

Local parent-teacher associations could track each CBT candidate's progress and petition the State Commission for timely training rollout.
