Anambra Police Explain Deployment to St. Faith Cathedral Amid Awka Diocese Leadership Dispute
The Anambra State Police Command says officers were deployed to St. Faith Cathedral, Awka, on Sunday to maintain peace and prevent any breakdown of law and order amid the leadership dispute in the Anglican Diocese of Awka. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the deployment did not amount to support for any side. He said officers were assigned to protect lives and property, prevent disturbances and safeguard everyone involved. The dispute followed a directive placing Archbishop Alexander Chibuzo Ibezim on six months’ compulsory leave and appointing Bishop Samuel Ezeofor to oversee the diocese. The Awka Diocesan Board rejected the directive, insisting that Ibezim remains in office. The command urged residents and media organisations to verify information and avoid reports that could worsen tension within the religious community.
