Tensions boiled over on March 22 as Newcastle United and Sunderland supporters clashed outside St James’ Park before kick-off. Punches were thrown and bottles were hurled, leaving a crack in the Sunderland team bus windscreen. Videos circulating online show police struggling to hold back home fans as away supporters broke away from their escort. Another Sunderland supporters’ coach was pelted with cans on its way out.
