Embrace Your Natural Glow: Dermatologists Urge Nigerians to Reject Skin Bleaching

Embrace Your Natural Glow: Dermatologists Urge Nigerians to Reject Skin Bleaching

The Dermatology Society of Lagos and the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists have called on Nigerians to prioritise skin health over colour ahead of World Skin Health Day on July 8. They warn that many bleaching creams contain harmful agents like mercury and potent steroids. These can lead to severe acne, infections, delayed healing and even organ damage. The campaign theme, Skin Health Beyond Skin Colour, champions simple routines such as gentle cleansing, moisturising, sun protection and prompt treatment of skin issues. It also promotes public outreach, healthcare worker training and a Pan-African webinar on tackling skin bleaching. Nigerians are urged to embrace their natural complexion and seek advice from qualified professionals rather than relying on unregulated products or social media myths.
