How Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing Works Before Birth

Uncertainty about an unborn child’s paternity can be emotionally difficult. A non-invasive prenatal paternity test can help establish biological parentage from about the ninth week of pregnancy. The test uses a blood sample from the pregnant woman and cheek-swab DNA samples from the alleged father or fathers. Fetal DNA circulating in the mother’s bloodstream is compared with the alleged father’s DNA markers. Unlike procedures such as chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis, this method does not require inserting a needle into the womb. Results are typically reported as more than 99% accurate, though anyone considering testing should use an accredited laboratory and seek proper medical guidance.
