Court Adjourns Ex-Minister Farouq’s Arraignment as She Battles Illness in Egypt
Sadiya Umar-Farouq, the former minister of Humanitarian Affairs, faces a 21-count charge for alleged breach of trust and abuse of office. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accuses her and two co-defendants of misappropriating about $1.3 million and ₦746.6 million. During Monday’s session, the EFCC’s counsel urged the court to sustain the bench warrant for Farouq, noting that the second defendant had surrendered. Farouq’s lawyer reported that she is hospitalised in Egypt and medically unfit to appear, requesting a two-month adjournment. The presiding judge criticised what he called delay tactics, kept the warrant active and adjourned proceedings to June 8, 2026, for arraignment.
