Health Insurers Withhold Backing for Lagos Private Health Plan Over NHIA Approval
Nigeria’s health insurance and managed-care associations say they have not endorsed the Lagos Private Health Plan in its current form. They want the plan to receive approval from the National Health Insurance Authority before implementation. The groups said HMO participation in consultations, the launch or expressions of interest should not be treated as industry-wide support. They maintained that accrediting an HMO is different from approving a specific health insurance plan. They also requested clarity on an alleged 13 per cent levy on private-sector health insurance, warning that extra charges could raise costs for employers and reduce access to care. The associations want detailed compliance guidelines, recognition for existing NHIA-approved cover and a review of the December 31, 2026 compliance deadline. While backing efforts to expand universal health coverage, the groups said implementation must be lawful, affordable and coordinated by Lagos authorities, the NHIA and other stakeholders.
