23-Year-Old Freelance AI Engineer on Unstable Income, Crypto Losses and His Mum’s Support
A 23-year-old freelance AI engineer shares how he moved from earning money through university coding projects to working remotely for startups in France, the US, India and Nigeria. Although some roles paid up to ₦600,000 monthly, poor workplace conditions, office politics and unpaid salaries pushed him back into freelancing. He now earns roughly ₦200,000 to ₦350,000 in active months, but income can also drop to zero. His mother remains his financial safety net, covering his rent, food and emergency needs while he searches for more stable work. After losing between $300 and $500 to crypto futures trading, he quit trading and began focusing on Nigerian stocks and mutual funds. He has about ₦1.5 million invested, no savings, and hopes to eventually secure a better-paying full-time role or relocate abroad.
