Young People Aged 15–24 Account for Over Half of New HIV Infections in Harare

Harare Metropolitan Province is reporting renewed concern over HIV infections among young people. Of its estimated 2,644 new infections each year, 1,341 are recorded among people aged 15 to 24. The province has about 195,429 people living with HIV and a prevalence rate of 8.4%. Officials say adolescent girls and young women remain particularly affected. Authorities plan to work with schools, parents, health agencies and local councils to improve HIV education and behavioural-change programmes. Young people have also been urged to use prevention services, including post-exposure prophylaxis after possible exposure to HIV.
