NAFDAC: Fresh Yam, Oranges and Other Farm Produce Are Regulated by Agriculture Ministry

NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye says fresh farm produce such as yams, oranges and apples does not fall directly under the agency’s regulatory control. She explained that the Ministry of Agriculture oversees produce in its natural state, while NAFDAC regulates semi-processed and processed foods. According to her, agencies need to work together because farm produce may later be processed into foods under NAFDAC’s supervision. The clarification follows public concerns about chemicals used on fruits and other foods, including concerns raised after former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo spoke about a laboratory test on freshly squeezed juice.
