Tax Agency Dumps Unstable National Grid with New 6MW Power Plant in Abuja

The Nigerian Revenue Service has secured a permit to build a 6.08MW captive power plant at its Abuja headquarters. This decision reflects growing distrust in the national grid’s reliability. Major companies and government agencies are following suit. In the same quarter, NERC approved over 11 captive power projects totaling more than 130MW. Big names include Abuja Steel Mill’s 50MW and Yongxing Steel’s 45MW plants. Frequent blackouts and grid collapses have driven firms to expensive diesel generators. Energy experts warn that as high-value customers exit, distribution companies will face a deeper liquidity crisis. The trend underscores a structural shift after the Electricity Act 2023. While self-generation offers a lifeline for those who can afford it, ordinary Nigerians may endure longer outages as the central grid loses both demand and investment.

I agree a dedicated 6MW plant could boost reliability, though ongoing maintenance costs and fuel sourcing might pose challenges.

Seems like more agencies distrust the national grid's stability, but will every organisation afford the upfront costs of a captive power plant installation?

Building private plants might help big agencies, yet it diverts funds from improving public infrastructure where broader communities would benefit more.

Agencies considering captive generation should conduct a cost-benefit analysis, factor in maintenance needs, and explore scalable options to ensure long-term savings.
