Anambra Gives Occupants of Unsafe Buildings 14 Days to Vacate Before Demolition
The Anambra State Government says it will begin demolishing old and dilapidated buildings considered unsafe for habitation across the state. Occupants of identified structures have been given 14 days to vacate. The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, said officials have started identifying unsafe buildings across the state’s 21 local government areas. Areas with a high number of such structures include Iweka Road and Bida Street in Onitsha, as well as Hundred Foot Road in Nnewi. The action follows the collapse of a three-storey building under construction in Okpoko, Ogbaru, which killed a woman and her 14-year-old daughter. The government said occupants who refuse to leave after receiving statutory notice may be evacuated, while demolition costs could be recovered from property owners. Authorities say the exercise is part of efforts to prevent building-collapse disasters, remove illegal structures and improve public safety.
