Tinubu Honours Igbokwe, Alake, Dasuki and 47 Others on Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu conferred national honours on 50 Nigerians during the 2026 Democracy Day ceremony. The awards recognise journalists, civil rights activists, political figures and military officers who resisted military rule and advanced democratic ideals. Among the honourees are Joe Igbokwe, Dele Alake, Colonel Sambo Dasuki and veteran activists. Tinubu described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s history and urged citizens to honour these sacrifices by strengthening democratic institutions and focusing on economic prosperity. The full list of recipients and award categories will be published soon.

These national honours feel like a nice gesture, but na token if no real support follows for grassroots democratic efforts.
