NPP Spokesperson Questions Fairness of 20-Year Sentence for Chairman Wontumi

Reactions have poured in from Ghana’s New Patriotic Party after a High Court sentenced Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for illegal mining. NPP spokesperson for Gender and Social Protection Akosua Manu warned that a rushed conviction undermines public trust in the judiciary. She called Wontumi “collateral damage” in a political struggle and urged citizens to demand transparency in all trials. In a formal statement, the party’s national leadership announced plans to appeal. The NPP argued that prosecution failed to prove illegal assignment of mineral rights and accused the current government of selective justice, pointing to unresolved allegations against ruling party figures. The NPP closed by pledging solidarity with its embattled chairman and confirming that legal challenges are already underway. The party labelled Wontumi a “political prisoner.”
