Court Orders INEC to Reinstate Access Party Registration
The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed INEC to resume the registration of Access Party and issue the access code needed to complete Form EC 15A(1). This follows a lawsuit over the suspension of the party’s registration due to its proposed logo. INEC had rejected the logo as too similar to an unregistered association. Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu ruled that the commission acted unlawfully and arbitrarily. He quashed INEC’s letter and awarded costs of ₦500,000 against the electoral body. The court confirmed that the proposed logo meets all constitutional and statutory requirements. INEC must now accept the party’s constitution, manifesto, membership register and minutes of its national executive election. A party leader called the judgment a win for democratic rights and urged prompt compliance ahead of the 2027 elections. The ruling is expected to set a precedent for how INEC handles new party registrations before the next general elections.
