Oshiomhole Tipped to Lead Senate as Senators Demand Tougher Economic and Security Oversight
Senators are reportedly unhappy with Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s handling of borrowing, insecurity and the economy. Political commentary suggests that a bloc of senators is considering Adams Oshiomhole of Edo North as a replacement when the position opens around June 30. Online posts claim senators want a leader who can hold the executive to account and even initiate impeachment if necessary. Oshiomhole’s supporters point to his reputation for firmness, comparing him to former Senate President Bukola Saraki. No official statement has come from the Senate, Oshiomhole or the APC caucus. Under the Constitution, removing a Senate President requires a two-thirds majority vote, followed by an internal election and possible party zoning decisions. President Tinubu’s administration defends its borrowing for infrastructure and reforms. At the same time, it stresses that tackling insecurity remains a top priority. There is currently no formal motion for removal or impeachment pending in the Senate.
