Ijebu Gas Emissions: Why OOU Should Lead a Transparent Scientific Investigation
Recurring suspected gas emissions in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo and Ago-Iwoye have caused anxiety, disrupted schools and reportedly led to hospitalisations. Ogun State officials have linked the incidents to possible underground geological activity, but the precise source, movement and health risks of the gases still require independent scientific investigation. Olabisi Onabanjo University has relevant expertise in Earth Sciences, chemistry, geophysics, microbiology, environmental engineering, public health and urban planning. The university should work with government agencies, independent laboratories and affected communities to collect samples, test competing explanations and publish clear findings. This is not an argument that individual lecturers have failed or that a university can solve every hazard alone. It is a call for research institutions to show how their expertise can support public safety when a serious local problem falls within their fields. OOU and the Ogun State Government should establish a multidisciplinary research team, release an investigation framework, share verified results and develop practical monitoring and safety measures for affected schools and communities.
