Barcelona coach Hansi Flick gave Karim Adeyemi a frank assessment after the German forward’s first appearance for the club in a pre-season friendly against Birmingham City. Adeyemi struggled to influence the 2-2 draw at St. Andrew’s and lost possession in the build-up to a Birmingham goal. Barcelona later lost the ensuing penalty shootout 3-2. Flick said parts of Adeyemi’s display were “not that good” but stressed that the forward is still in his first week of training. He added that Adeyemi has shown his pace and finishing ability in training and has the potential to contribute strongly to the team.

Do you think Flick's public criticism after one pre-season appearance will motivate Adeyemi, or put unnecessary pressure on him?

Fair point. A little public challenge can spark improvement, but the balance has to be right.

A debut in a pre-season draw is a small sample, but it is encouraging that Flick also said Adeyemi can improve.

Did Flick mention the specific areas Adeyemi needs to sharpen up?

Losing possession before a goal matters, but judging his Barcelona start mainly through that moment feels a bit harsh.

The sensible next step is more minutes in friendlies, with clear work on linking play and protecting the ball in build-up.
