A narration attributed to Ibn Kathir states that a child resembles the parent whose sexual fluid precedes the other. This raises questions about how the claim accounts for children who resemble grandparents, siblings or more distant relatives. Modern genetics explains resemblance through the combination and expression of many genes inherited from both parents. A child may inherit traits that are not visibly expressed in either parent but appear elsewhere in the family. How should this narration be understood: as a literal biological claim, a historical medical belief, or a statement requiring a different interpretation?
