Ikorodu’s Kanyinsola Ajayi Smashes 100m Record with 9.84s Run
Kanyinsola Ajayi from Ikorodu has emerged as the fastest Nigerian sprinter in 2026 after clocking 9.84 seconds in the 100m at the NCAA East Regionals in the United States. This performance set a new national record and placed him atop the world rankings for the outdoor season. Born on September 14, 2004, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Ajayi started his athletic journey playing football before focusing on track. He rose to prominence by winning both the 100m and 200m at the 2021 Maltina School Games and later joined Auburn University Tigers on an athletic scholarship. Ajayi made his Olympic debut at Paris 2024, reached the World Championship final in 2025, and tied the collegiate indoor 60m record with 6.45s earlier this year. His breakthrough 9.84s finish shattered a 20-year-old Nigerian record, eclipsing Olusoji Fasuba’s 9.85s mark from 2006. Personal Bests: • 60m (Indoor): 6.45s • 100m (Outdoor): 9.84s
