Nigerian Council Sets Heat-Safety Rules for Construction Workers
The Sector Skills Council for Building in Nigeria has issued new measures to protect construction workers from extreme heat and other weather-related hazards. The advisory tells companies and property developers to pause non-essential heavy outdoor work from 12pm to 3:30pm. Labour-intensive tasks such as roofing, concrete pouring, excavation and scaffolding should be moved to early morning or late afternoon. Contractors are also advised to provide clean drinking water near active work areas and give workers regular hydration breaks. The Council recommends stocking first-aid stations with oral rehydration salts, ice packs and wet towels. It warns that heat exposure can cause dehydration and heatstroke, and raise the risk of falls and machinery-related accidents.
