Lagos Residents Urged to Seek Help Early for Mental Health Challenges
Lagos State Governor’s wife, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has urged residents to seek professional support early when they notice changes in their emotional well-being or behaviour. Speaking at a mental health awareness programme in Badagry, she said withdrawal, isolation and an inability to function normally may be signs of emotional distress. She urged families, employers and communities to respond with care rather than stigma. Mental health experts at the event said depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and substance abuse are often underreported because many people fear being judged or do not recognise the symptoms. They stressed that mental health conditions are treatable and that people can live productive lives with proper care and support. Participants were also encouraged to promote mental health awareness in homes, schools, religious centres and community groups, while referring people in distress to qualified professionals.
