Jesus’ Tribute to John the Baptist (Matthew 11:1–19)
After sending his twelve disciples, Jesus traveled through Galilee to teach and preach. From prison, John the Baptist heard of Jesus’ works and sent followers to ask if he was the awaited Messiah. Jesus pointed to the miracles—healing the blind, the lame, the deaf, cleansing lepers, raising the dead, and preaching to the poor—as proof. Jesus then spoke to the crowd about John. He called him more than a prophet and the forerunner who would prepare the way. Jesus said no one born of women was greater than John, yet even the least in God’s kingdom is greater. He compared their generation to children in marketplaces who refused to dance or mourn at their messages. John’s ascetic life led some to call him demon-possessed, while Jesus, who ate and drank with sinners, was branded a glutton and drunkard. Still, wisdom is proven by its deeds.
