How Rising Living Costs Are Squeezing Nigerian Families
For many Nigerian families, managing money has become a daily struggle. Food, transport, rent, school fees, electricity and healthcare now consume incomes that once covered basic needs. Even homes with two earners can find that their salaries no longer last until month-end. A household earning ₦150,000 may have little left after essential expenses. An illness, repair or other emergency can quickly disrupt the budget. This pressure affects more than finances. It can cause anxiety, disagreements between couples, reduced family time and difficult choices over food, education and medical care. Families are cutting non-essential spending, buying cheaper alternatives, taking extra jobs and starting small businesses. Budgeting and emergency savings can help, but they cannot fully solve a situation where essential costs rise faster than incomes. Better wages, jobs and affordable basic services are needed to give households lasting relief.
