Nigerians Mourn Nollywood Icon Taiwo Hassan “Ògògó” After His Death
Nigerians, Nollywood colleagues and industry leaders are mourning veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ògògó, who died on Sunday, 23 August 2026, aged 66, after a battle with stage four cancer. Born in Ilaro, Ogun State, Ògògó was a pioneer of Yoruba cinema and the travelling-theatre tradition. He left his job at the Lagos State Water Corporation in 1994 to pursue acting full-time and became one of the defining faces of the home-video era. Across more than four decades, he appeared in classics including Owo Blow, Aníkúlápó and Seven Doors. Fans have been sharing memories of his charisma, powerful screen presence, distinctive chants and lasting influence on Yoruba Nollywood.
