Did Satan Challenge God in the Book of Job? A Different Reading

The Book of Job is often presented as a story in which Satan challenges God. But the text can also be read differently: Satan appears before God as a seeker and servant, rather than as an open challenger. In this reading, Satan’s accusation about Job’s faithfulness led God to permit Job’s suffering. The passage even says that God was moved to strike a blameless and God-fearing man without cause. This reverses the familiar expectation that the righteous pray for God to act against evil. In Job’s case, the adversary’s words appear to move God against a righteous man.
