How to Calculate Your CGPA: Simple Formula and Worked Example
Many students find CGPA calculations confusing. On a 5.0 scale, grade points are commonly A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1 and F = 0. Some schools award F for any score below 45, so always confirm your institution’s grading policy. To calculate your GPA for one semester, multiply each course unit by its grade point. Add the results, then divide by the total course units. For example, an A in a 3-unit course gives 15 points, a C in a 2-unit course gives 6 points, and a B in a 3-unit course gives 12 points. That is 33 points across 8 units, giving a GPA of 4.13. For your CGPA, add all quality points earned across every semester and divide by the total units taken. Do not simply average your semester GPAs if the semesters have different unit loads. Degree-class ranges also vary by school, so check your student handbook for the official standard.
