Yorubaland: Borders, Neighbouring Peoples and Global Diaspora
The Yoruba people are mainly found in south-western Nigeria, as well as parts of Benin and Togo. Their neighbouring communities include the Itsekiri, Bariba, Nupe, Ebira, Edo, Esan, Afemai and Igala peoples. Yoruba communities also share borders with several Gbe- and Kwa-speaking groups in Benin and Togo. Significant Yoruba populations can also be found in Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Sierra Leone. Outside Africa, the Yoruba diaspora includes descendants of people taken to the Caribbean and Brazil during the transatlantic slave trade. More recent migration has also created large Yoruba communities in the United Kingdom and the United States.
