Beyond the Badge: How POCACOV Is Redefining Community Policing in Nigeria

Beyond the Badge: How POCACOV Is Redefining Community Policing in Nigeria — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Many Nigerians view “Police are your friends” with doubt, shaped by past stories or experiences. Yet a new era of policing under IGP Olatunji Disu aims to prove that slogan true. Through the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), officers partner with schools, places of worship, markets and community groups. Led by SP Onne Ikwen, teams visit pupils and youths to discuss drug abuse, cybercrime, bullying and responsible citizenship. The recent relaunch in Rivers State brought together the Commissioner of Police, traditional rulers, youth organisations and civil society. Their goal is simple: prevent one young person from choosing crime today, and protect countless lives tomorrow. Real safety goes beyond arrests. It begins with guidance, mentorship and a shared sense of responsibility. When police, families and communities work together, “Police are your friends” becomes more than a slogan—it becomes hope.

Do you think this new campaign under Disu can really shift public trust towards the police in our communities?

Absolutely! Disu's new POCACOV push just might sprinkle that trust magic we need.

It's interesting they partner with schools, but past experiences have left many feeling that slogans alone won't change deep-rooted policing issues.

I worry the focus on cultism and vices overshadows other critical crime areas where community voices are equally important.

Schools and parents should host open forums with POCACOV officers, sharing feedback and concerns directly to build genuine collaboration.
