Is Virginity Still a Realistic Standard for Marriage Today?

The debate over virginity and marriage standards continues. I believe men and women have traditionally been assessed differently: men by their ability to provide and women by their sexual discipline. In many families, a prospective husband is questioned about his work, income and capacity to support a home. A prospective wife may be assessed for her character, values and sexual history. I see virginity as a sign of self-control and discipline, especially in a changing society. Others may disagree with these expectations or argue that both partners should be held to the same standard. Is virginity still a realistic and worthwhile expectation for marriage today, and should it apply equally to men and women?

The different standards described here can create pressure for both men and women, just in different areas.

True, though I'm not convinced either side fully understands the pressure the other faces.

Reducing either partner to sexual history or income may overlook character, compatibility, and shared expectations.

Before marriage, couples should discuss values, finances, sexual boundaries, and what commitment means to each person.
