ADC, Aregbesola Fined N1m Over Bid to Recuse Judge in Gombe’s Suit
The Federal High Court in Abuja has fined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, a total of N1 million for filing meritless motions to recuse Justice Peter Lifu from a suit brought by aggrieved party member Nafiu-Bala Gombe. Justice Lifu held that the recusal applications were devoid of credible evidence and amounted to an abuse of court process and forum shopping. He noted that bias allegations are grave and must be supported by clear proof. The judge also criticised the timing of the motions, filed before the court assumed jurisdiction, and warned against allowing litigants to choose judges who might favour their cases. He dismissed the applications and awarded N500,000 costs against each applicant in favour of the plaintiff. The matter has been adjourned to June 23 for hearing of all pending applications. Gombe is seeking to restrain key party figures from parading themselves as ADC leaders amid internal disputes.
