Affordable Housing in Nigeria: Our Aspirations Versus Economic Reality
There is a truth we often avoid. We call for affordable housing but secretly expect a luxury duplex on a starter budget. We admire how prefab and modular homes scale up cheaply elsewhere. Yet we resist those solutions for ourselves. We only embrace innovations for others while demanding high roofs and unique designs to signal status. The real barriers go beyond materials. Infrastructure gaps, unstable policies, lengthy approvals and limited financing make mass housing impossible. Factories wait months for permits, and power or transport remain unreliable. Until we fix these systemic challenges and align our housing goals with our means, debates over flat versus hidden roofs will solve nothing. Material choices alone cannot deliver affordable homes.
