How NELFUND Can Build Trust and Ensure Student Loan Repayment

NELFUND was created under the 2024 Students Loan Act to widen access to higher education. For the scheme to last, beneficiaries must understand that it is a repayable loan, not a government giveaway. A culture of refusing repayment could weaken the fund and deny future students the same opportunity. I believe Nigerians need a stronger sense of collective ownership of public programmes. Years of failed promises and poorly managed interventions have created distrust in government, making many people view new schemes with suspicion. Sustained public education, transparency and consistent delivery can help rebuild confidence in NELFUND. Education and civic re-orientation should be central to this effort. Citizens need to understand how public programmes work, why repayment matters and how responsible participation protects shared resources. NELFUND should also work closely with institutions, banks, the CBN, NYSC and the National Identity Management Commission to create reliable repayment and tracking systems. Clear rules, effective coordination and accountability will be essential if the student loan scheme is to remain sustainable.
