Starmer Bids Farewell as UK Prime Minister, Vows Support for Successor Burnham

Starmer Bids Farewell as UK Prime Minister, Vows Support for Successor Burnham

Outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered his final session in parliament on July 15 ahead of handing over to Labour’s newest leader, Andy Burnham. He pledged his full support privately if requested and expressed his hope for the party’s continued success under fresh leadership. Starmer stepped down after months of pressure following a series of scandals and policy U-turns that challenged his two-year tenure. Burnham secured overwhelming backing from Labour MPs and trade unions and will become prime minister once he is formally asked to form the next government. MPs from all parties rose to applaud Starmer’s farewell address. Even opposition leader Kemi Badenoch offered measured praise, while warning that changing leaders alone won’t solve the country’s deeper challenges. Starmer closed with heartfelt thanks to those who inspired his journey and a final farewell from the despatch box.

It's unusual for a departing prime minister to pledge full backing behind the scenes rather than publicly campaigning.

Privately offered support sounds generous, but it risks appearing unreliable compared to a visible leadership role.

Labour members should stay engaged in policy debates now if they want to shape Burnham's early agenda effectively.
