After 126 Days Detained, El-Rufai’s Trial Adjourned to September
A Federal High Court in Abuja has pushed former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai’s trial to September 22, 2026. He has spent 126 days in custody on charges of abuse of office, money laundering and alleged wiretapping. El-Rufai was first taken into custody on February 16 after an EFCC invitation and transfer to the ICPC. He pleaded not guilty on April 23 but failed to meet stringent bail terms set on May 18. The bail conditions require a Grade Level 17 federal civil servant surety who owns property in Maitama or Asokoro and must deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy. His lawyer plans to file a no-case submission before the next hearing. Family sources warn that his health is deteriorating, with possible prostate cancer developing. The Nigerian Bar Association has also criticised overly punitive bail practices that effectively deny suspects their freedom.
