Four-Hour Deluge Floods Farms and Markets in Ebonyi Communities
Heavy rains and strong winds swept through Abakaliki, Akpoha and neighbouring communities in Afikpo North, Ebonyi, leaving farms submerged and shops damaged. The four-hour downpour flooded the Abakaliki–Afikpo Expressway, washed away yam, cassava, maize, rice and melon crops worth millions of naira, and blew off roofs at Kpiri-Kpiri and Ebebe Junction markets. Affected farmers say they may have to replant this season and called on emergency agencies for relief and seeds. Community leaders warn that local terrain makes Afikpo, Amasiri and Akpoha highly flood-prone. They have appealed to state and national emergency management bodies for urgent assistance with seedlings, chemicals and building materials to protect lives, livelihoods and food security.
