Why Opposition Candidates Will Struggle to Finance Their Presidential Campaign
We estimate that placing a single presidential advert costs around N50 million per state. Even at an average of N30 million, running two large adverts in each of the 774 local government areas would add up to tens of billions of naira. On top of billboard fees, candidates usually charter at least two private jets and five helicopters to tour the country. Visits to Obas, Igwes and Emirs often require generous gifts, and there are hundreds of traditional rulers across Nigeria. Logistics also demand branded buses and cars in every LGA, along with fuel and crew support. Since grassroots supporters rarely raise over N5 billion, most funds come from major allies who treat campaign financing as a strategic investment.
