Court Forfeits 48 Properties Linked to Ex-AGF Malami to FG

Court Forfeits 48 Properties Linked to Ex-AGF Malami to FG — 1 of 22

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted final forfeiture of 48 assets tied to former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami to the Federal Government. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission proved the properties were bought with proceeds of unlawful activities. Key assets forfeited include Rayhaan University sites and radio station in Kebbi State, several luxury buildings and hotel units in Abuja, Kano, and Birnin Kebbi, as well as factory and commercial facilities. The court held Malami and others failed to show lawful sources of funds for these acquisitions. An interim forfeiture order was first issued in January 2026. After inviting challenges, the court concluded on July 15, 2026, that the respondents did not meet the burden of proof required in non-conviction forfeiture proceedings. Consequently, all properties have vested in the Federal Government.

I agree, reclaiming those assets could strengthen citizens' confidence in tackling corruption more effectively.

It's notable that 48 properties were linked to a former AGF, yet many details on asset origins remain unclear.

I dey doubt if seizing these properties alone will really stop powerful figures from finding new ways to hide illicit funds.

These forfeiture orders should prompt tighter oversight on title registrations and regular audits of public officials' declared assets.
